In a previous post, we featured print solutions company, Spiral Colour, out of the UK. The team recently worked with Parker Design Consultants to complete a series of lamppost signs and countdown boards for an extensive drainage and improvement project in Lancaster.

Parker Design Consultants, graphic and web design agency based in Cheshire and London, were commissioned by their client to design a series of signs that would enable the city to navigate traffic around the affected areas.

To achieve this goal, the team collaborated with Spiral Colour who states, “We printed the signs onto light weight Dibond (an aluminum composite panel) and shaped radius corners for safety. The signs were printed directly onto the Dibond by our Jetrix flatbed press, in a high resolution, fine art print and spot varnished to give extra weather protection. The signs were then installed by our in-house signage installation team, using a Tamtorque system, a strong, steel clamp and clip system.”

In addition to the lamppost signs that announced the shop and business openings, the team at Spiral was responsible for creating a system of signs used on roundabouts. These “countdown boards” allowed drivers to avoid certain areas while keeping them informed on the United Utilities’ progress. The signs were constructed using a three-sided timber frame, with the Dibond aluminum composite signs fixed to each side. The team at Spiral Colour furthers explains, “…We then attached an A2 lockable poster frame to the boards which would house the numbers. The numbers were printed onto a polypropylene, which was strong, flexible and waterproof. A number was taken away each morning to create an accurate countdown.”

Dibond’s weatherability properties allow the material to withstand external elements, providing the ideal substrate for external signage applications. The material won’t bow, and has approximately half the weight of traditional aluminum due to the material’s polyethylene core.
